Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the symbol of wisdom, intelligence, and prosperity. According to Hindu beliefs, devotees worship Ganesha before starting any important work because he is believed to remove difficulties and bring success.
The festival is deeply connected with faith, family bonding, and spiritual cleansing. Many people pray during this time for career growth, peaceful relationships, better health, and mental clarity.
The story begins with Goddess Parvati, who created a young boy using sandalwood paste and gave him life. She asked him to guard her chamber while she bathed.
When Lord Shiva returned home, the young boy stopped him from entering because he did not recognize him. Angered by this, Shiva severed the boy’s head. Seeing Parvati’s grief, Shiva promised to restore the child’s life. His followers brought the head of an elephant, and Shiva revived the boy.
That child later became Lord Ganesha — worshipped as the god of wisdom, new beginnings, and obstacle removal.
This story is why devotees believe that praying to Ganesha first brings balance and protection into life.
Welcoming Lord Ganesha into the house is considered highly sacred. The ritual does not need to be complicated. Devotion matters more than perfection.
Clean the prayer area properly before bringing the idol home. Spread a clean red or yellow cloth on a wooden platform and place uncooked rice (akshat) over it.
Place the Ganesh murti carefully on the platform. If an idol is unavailable, devotees can use a puja supari symbolically.
Sprinkle Gangajal around the space for purification.
Offer red or yellow cloth to Lord Ganesha and apply sandalwood or kumkum tilak on the forehead.
Hold water, flowers, and akshat in your right hand and make a sankalp by mentioning your name and the number of days you will keep Ganapati at home.
Offer:
Chant:
“Om Gan Ganapataye Namah”
Morning and evening aarti are considered highly auspicious during the ten-day celebration.
The Madhyahna period is considered the best time for Ganesh Sthapana because it is believed Lord Ganesha was born during this time.

Simple chanting helps calm the mind and increase focus during worship.

On the final day, devotees perform a special aarti before immersion and pray for blessings, prosperity, and forgiveness for any mistakes made during worship.
Families traditionally chant:
“Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya”
The visarjan symbolizes the cycle of creation and detachment — Lord Ganesha returns to Kailash while leaving blessings behind.
