Here is an interesting story behind this Vrat-Puja of Kamada Ekadashi according to Hindu mythological beliefs.
Lord Krishan narrated this story of Kamada Ekadashi to Pandavas in the Mahabharata period. The story begins like that there was a king of the serpent Pundarik in the olden days. Pundarik was the king of a great city named Bhogipur in Naglok which used to be full of affluence and prosperity. There used to be palaces that were made of gold. King Pundarik was fond of music and dance so he had employed various Apsaras, Gandharvas, and Kinnars for his occasional fling and avocation. There was a great Gandharv Lalit whose art of singing and dancing was of unparallel standard. Whenever he performed in the court of King’s palace every watcher and beholder had become spellbound in his song and dance performance. Once the king had invited his friend Karkotak serpent. Both were watching the dance of Lalit with great passion and enthusiasm. But suddenly King became furious having seen a small mistake in dancing.
Lalit used to love his wife Lalita passionatily. Lalit got a bit absorbed in the feeling of his beloved while dancing and, Karkotak had found the mistake of performance. He complained to the king of this fault of dance performance. The angry king Pundarik cursed Lilit to become a demon. He started wandering in the forest under the curse of king Pudarik. When his wife Lalita heard the news of his curse she had become gloomy and depressed. She was anxious about her husband’s filthy condition. She started chasing her in the forest to help him. While roaming in the forest Lalita suddenly came across a great Rishi (sage) and asked him to get rid of his husband’s curse. The Rishi was a benevolent person and, he took pity on her. He told her about Kamada Ekadashi. He further told her that she should do Vrat-Puja of Kamada Ekadashi to get rid of the vicious curse of his husband. Lilita did the Vrat-Puja of Kamada Ekadashi by following every ritual guided by the great sage. Due to the grace of supreme God Vishnu, Lalita had got the complete cure from the curse of his husband. Lalit got his youth and charm and his married life had been restored due to the Vrat-Pujan of Kamada Ekadashi. The Ekadashi is celebrated on Chitra Shukla Paksha. Devotees get absolved from all types of sins and get the togetherness of the God Vishnu afterlife.
