The festival of Rath Yatra is one of the most significant festivals of India, and many devotees from all over the country celebrate this holy festival with glee and joy, but the most gorgeous event of this festival is found only in Jagannath Puri of Orissa state. Jagannath temple at Puri is one of the four states of India where Rath Yatra is organized.

It is also one of the oldest temples of India and Lord Shri Krishna, Balram and their sister goddess Subhadra is worshipped here. This Rath Yatra begins on the second day of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashadh according to Hindu calendar. On this day a large number of devotees gather from all over the country and abroad to participate in the Rath Yatra festival. Celebration of the Rath Yatra will be celebrated on the 4th of July, Thursday, in 2019 this year. According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Rath Yatra is celebrated on the second date of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashadh. There are many mythological and historical beliefs and legends famous about the origins of this festival.

 

Celebration of the Rath Yatra started from Jagannath Puri. After this, the festival began to be celebrated with joyful celebrations all over India. In the early days of the beginning of the Jagannath Rath Yatra, the ancient rulers of Vanishing plant a broom in front of Lord Jagannath's chariot with a gold-bush cluster, and after this, Ratha yatra was started with mantras.

With the beginning of the chariot journey, many traditional instruments are played and hundreds of people pull chariots using thick ropes. At the front is the chariot of Krishna's brother Lord Balram Ji. Closely following is the chariot of Subhadra ji. In the end, is Jagannath ji's chariot which devotees pull very dedicatedly.

 

That is why devotees are enthusiastic to take the chariot of Lord Balbhadra, Subhadra ji, and Lord Jagannath on this day. This chariot of Jagannath Ji completes by reaching the temple of Gunde. This is the place where Lord Vishwakarma Ji built those three statues of God.

 

Although the programs of Rath Yatra are celebrated at many places in India and abroad. But some of these chariot journeys are such that it is very popular all around the world, some of them are  The Rath Yatra, organized in Jagannathpuri of Orissa, Mahesh Rath Yatra, organized in Hooghly in West Bengal, Rath Yatra to be held in Rajbahal of West Bengal and America Rath Yatra to be held in New York City.

 

Puri Rath Yatra History

The history of this festival of Rath Yatra in Puri is quite old and it was started in 1150 by the Ganga Dynasty. This was the festival which became popular throughout the whole of India as the name of Rath Yatra of Puri. At the same time, this was the first Indian festival in the A western world about which the foreign people got information. About this festival, famous finders like Marco Polo have also described in their books.
