Story behind the Tulsi Vivah

There is a tale which is linked with Lord Vishnu which gave birth to the festival of Tulsi Vivah (basil wedding).

It is said that there was a monster king named Jalandhar who was notorious for his evil acts, however, the secret of behind his great success was the character of his wife Veranda or Pativrata Dharma (loyalty towards his partner). Veranda was so dedicated towards his husband that his loyalty made his husband almost undefeatable. She attained these spiritual powers due to his loyalty and from worshipping Lord Vishnu.

She was a firm believer and worshiper of Lord Vishnu and prayed continuously for the welfare of her husband.

To obstruct the evil acts and power of Jalandhar, Vishnu decided to dissolve the fondness of Vrinda, and he did so by taking the form of Jalandhar and touched Veranda. Jalandhar at the same time was fighting vigorously against the Devtas (gods), but as Veranda’s Sattva (Pativrata) was destroyed at the same moment Jalandhar got killed. At the same moment, Jalandhar's head fell into her lawn.

Vrinda after viewing this became furious and ached to know who killed his husband and the reason behind his death. As she came to know what exactly happened and also came to know that it was Lord Visnu who was standing right in front of her she cursed Lord Vishnu, She said that he will become a Shaligram rock and saying 'Just as you have tricked me for killing my husband with deceit, in the same way, your wife will also be Deceptively and you will also burn in the suffering of separation of your wife and you will take a birth in the death world (taking birth on earth as a human)' saying this, Vrinda became Sati with her husband. It was due to the curse of Vrinda that Lord Shri Ram was born in Ayodhya and he had to suffer Sita's separation.

As Lord, Vishnu was cursed by Vrinda, and as she was his true follower and worshiper Lord Vishnu accepted her curse and finally became a Shaligram rock. Everyone was horrified including the God's and Devtas (who belong to the god's land Swarg) as the entire universe became unstable as the Lord Vishnu is known as the guardian of the universe and he was now in the form of a rock, all Devtas's along with goddess Laxmi prayed Vrinda to take his curse back, where Vridha was turned to ashes and the Tulsi (basil) plant grew.

Lord Vishnu at this time told Vrinda that she has loved him more than the goddess Laxmi while following the Sattva (Pativrata) and due to this he was happy from her sacrifice and said that she will always stay next to him as a Tulsi plant and since then every year in the month of Dev-Uthaavanee Ekadashi's day is celebrated as the day of Tulsi Vivah, and anyone who worships Shaligram form of Lord Vishnu gets immense fame in this world and beyond.

The Tulsi plant is said to be at the form of Goddess Lakshmi, and Vrinda is one of her incarnations. In the next life, on the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu married Tulsi in Shaligram form. Thus, the Tulsi wedding ceremony entails the marriage of a Shaligram stone from a Tulsi plant.
