You arrange all the worshiping materials and call for a Pandit for the worshiping of the goddess Durga. Many people observe a fast which starts from the first puja. That is called Shealputri. It continues till the ninth day of puja which is called Sidhidatri. Devotes just have mild fast in the middle of that and may eat milk or fruits.
