2025 Devshayani Ekadashi popularly known as ‘Devpodhi Ekadashi’, ‘Padma Ekadashi’, ‘Devshayani Ekadashi’ or ‘Maha Ekadashi’ is an auspicious day for Vaishnavas. It is celebrated on the 11th day, ‘Ekadashi’ of the Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of moon) during the month of ‘Ashadha’ according to the Hindu calendar. That's why this Ekadashi is also called ‘Ashadhi Ekadashi’. As per the Gregorian calendar, the date comes somewhere between the months of June & July. On Shayani Ekadashi, Hindu devotees worship God Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi with full zeal and dedication.

This Ekadashi occurs during the time when Lord Vishnu sleeps on the ‘Shesha Naag’ (the cosmic servant) in the ‘Ksheersagar’ (cosmic ocean of milk) and that's the name ‘Hari Shayani Ekadashi’. In the southern regions of India, it is also called as ‘Toli Ekadashi’. According to Hindu mythology, God Vishnu finally wakes, after four months, on this day of ‘Prabodhini Ekadashi’. This slumber period of the lord is referred to as ‘Chaturmas’ and it concurs during the rainy season. The Holy Rituals of Devshayni Ekadashi 2025 Vrat

On this day taking a holy bath is considered to be very auspicious. Followers in large number gather at Nasik, to take bath in the sacred Godavari River, in the honour of  Lord  Rama, an avatar of  Lord Vishnu. On this Ekadashi, devotees wake up early and take a holy bath in any water bodies. Lord Vishnu is then worshipped with zeal on this day. Fruits, flowers, incense sticks and dhoop are offered to Lord Vishnu. Followers prepare a special ‘Bhog’ and offer it to the Lord. An aarti is then chanted and then the ‘Prasad’ is distributed among all the family members. ‘Rama’ is also the other name for Goddess Lakshmi. Therefore on this auspicious day, followers also offer prayers to Devi Lakshmi along with Lord Vishnu to seek the blessings of prosperity, health and success. The followers of the Devshayani Ekadashi fast maintain vigil all through the night. They participate in the bhajans or kirtans organised on this day. Reciting ‘Bhagavad Gita’ on this day is believed to be auspicious.

Devshayani/Ashadi Ekadashi 2025 Fasting Rituals

On the day of Shayani Ekadashi, devotees also take a fast by avoiding specific foods like rice, beans, grains, cereals,  vegetables and spices. By keeping a fast on this day, the follower will be able to solve all the problems of his life. 

God Vishnu is worshipped on this day. Devotees decorate the idol of Lord Vishnu with Gadha, Chakra, Shank and bright yellow clothes. Incense, Lampa flowers, betel nut and sweets are offered to the Lord. After the puja is done, the aarti is recited and the prasad is distributed with other devotees. 

On this day the follower of this Vrat must stay awake all night and recite religious bhajans or songs in praise of Lord Vishnu. Chanting religious books like ‘Vishnu Sahartanaam’ is also considered very sacred.
