Long ago King Harishchandra of Ayodhya was known for being very honest. One day a wise man named Sage Vishwamitra wanted to test him. He took away Harishchandras kingdom, money and everything he had.

Harishchandra even sold himself his wife Taramati and their son. He did this because he had made a promise and wanted to keep it. He then worked at a place where dead bodies were burned. He faced problems.. He did not give up telling the truth.

One day his wife came to that place with their son. The son had died from a snake bite. Seeing how sad they were another wise man named Sage Gautama told Harishchandra to pray to Lord Vishnu. He said Harishchandra should observe a fast called Aja Ekadashi.

Harishchandra prayed all night. Chanted Lord Vishnus name. He did this with a lot of devotion. Because of the power of Aja Ekadashi, his son became alive again. His family was together again. Day Before Ekadashi (Dashami — September 6)
