Devuthani Ekadashi or Devotthan Ekadashi, known as Prabodhini Ekadashi. The awakening of Lord Vishnu after four months of sleeping is celebrated as Devotthan Ekadashi. Devuthani Ekadashi is considered very auspicious in the Hindu religion. All auspicious work like marriages, which are paused during Chaturmas, start again after this day. There are twenty-four Ekadashis in the Hindu religion, and devotees usually observe a fast on these days. These Ekadashis are considered the gateway to salvation – an ultimate way to get rid of the sins of the present and past lives. If you observe the fast and worship Lord Vishnu with great devotion, you receive immense blessings in return. Prabodhini or Devotthan Ekadashi is celebrated in the Shukla Paksha of Kartik Mas and normally falls after the great Hindu festival of Deepawali. All marriages and auspicious ceremonies begin again after Prabodhini Ekadashi, since Lord Vishnu is the epitome of auspiciousness. Prabodhini Ekadashi is also celebrated as the marriage of Tulsi – Lord Vishnu is fond of Tulsi leaves, and his worship is considered incomplete without offering them on this day.
The Historical Legend Behind the Celebration of Devauthani Ekadashi 2026
Why is Devuthani Ekadashi considered the most auspicious among all the Ekadashis? The story behind its celebration begins with sage Narad, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, who once asked his father, the Creator Brahma Ji, about the importance of Devuthani Ekadashi or Prabodhini Ekadashi.
Brahma Ji explained that the blessings of Prabodhini Ekadashi are extremely difficult to attain, even for deities. Devotees who observe the fast on this day get all their desires fulfilled through the grace of God – blessings considered greater than those from thousands of Ashwamedha Yagyas or hundreds of Rajasuya Yagyas. No other spiritual practice can match the merit earned from observing Prabodhini or Devuthani Ekadashi. Those who fast with sincerity and devotion are believed to attain a place in Baikunth, the abode of Lord Vishnu himself, after their demise.
If you seek success in every area of life – health, career, business, or family – observing this Ekadashi fast is considered highly beneficial. According to ancient scriptures, fasting on Prabodhini Ekadashi carries merit equal to donating thousands of cows at once, and is said to be equivalent to visiting all the pilgrimage sites in the world. It is believed to free the soul from sin and the cycle of birth and death, granting devotees a place in Vishnulok. Observing this fast is also believed to help liberate one’s ancestors from their sins. Devotees who fast without breaking it the same day, and stay awake through the night in devotion to Lord Vishnu, are considered to attain great virtue. Devuthani or Prabodhini Ekadashi is regarded as the most virtuous of all twenty-four Ekadashis, and devoted followers never miss the chance to observe it.

Know the Best Way to Perform Rituals, Worship, and Observe the Fast on Devuthani Ekadashi 2026
Like other Ekadashi Vrat-Pujas, Prabodhini Ekadashi is celebrated with devotion. Devotees wake up early in the morning and bathe to cleanse themselves before wearing clean clothes for worship.
- Sanctify the entire place of worship with Ganga Jal.
- Avoid spicy food the day before Devuthani Ekadashi – it’s advisable to eat Satwik food the evening before Prabodhini Ekadashi.
- Devotees install an idol of Lord Vishnu for worship and take a resolution to observe the fast with great devotion. Creating an image of Lord Vishnu in the courtyard is also considered highly auspicious on this day.
- According to Hindu mythology, devotees make an image of Lord Vishnu in a hollow (Okhli), surrounded by items like nuggets, water, chestnuts, sugarcane, sweets, and fruits – an old ritual performed while chanting “Arise Deva” to wake Lord Vishnu.
- Devotees chant mantras such as “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya” or the Vishnu Sahastranama.
- Consuming grains on Ekadashi is strictly prohibited according to Ekadashi rituals – fruits may be eaten if one feels the need.
- Listening to and reciting the story of Prabodhini Ekadashi is considered highly fruitful while observing the fast. Devotees stay awake through the night in religious contemplation of Shree Narayan, often performing bhajan or kirtan.
- Breaking the fast on Dwadashi morning is believed to fulfil every wish and bring peace and tranquillity.
